Guitar Playing And How You Can Succeed At It

Are you a music lover, but don’t know how to play any instruments? It is never too late to get started! Learning to play music is possible at any age. A guitar is a great first instruments and some tips on how to play are below.

Figure out the simple stuff first. Do not try to learn too much too quickly. While you may be tempted by a complicated piece, try to resist the urge. Learn finger positioning. Practice scales and chords regularly. Knowing these well is necessary before you attempt harder material.

Stay persistent with learning the guitar. Make a long-term dream for yourself, but also keep short-term goals in mind. See if you can practice with friends that also play guitar. As one week ends, give yourself a reward for practicing everyday consistently. Nothing worthy or valuable is easy to get.

Enjoy yourself when you practice the guitar. This is an elective activity. Don’t stress yourself out and hate playing. If you do, you can find yourself becoming tired and resenting practice time, which can cause you to give up playing. Instead, practice and play music that you love and that speaks to you.

When you begin your musical journey of learning to play the guitar, do whatever is necessary to get access to a quality instrument on which to practice. You may want to think about borrowing a guitar or renting one, if you can’t buy one. Using a quality guitar will ensure a better sound.

Expect your fingertips to be sore until you start to develop calluses. To help ease the pain, try out a guitar with nylon strings or one that is electric. Acoustic guitars are harder to play for beginners. You can ease the pain in your fingertips by soaking them in rubbing alcohol. Don’t follow old wive’s tales that tell you to use dangerous liquids, such as turpentine.


A metronome should be used. Learning to keep time is very important and can be a struggle for guitar players. The metronome will help you stay on beat. It will not be long and your practice will have you keeping a beat with no need for assistance.

Don’t go into this expecting to play a great Jimi Hendrix guitar solo right away. It’s best to start with simple songs. Start with simpler songs instead of tackling hard licks. Kids’ songs might seem goofy, but they will help you hone your skills quickly.

Start slow. You may want to play a song that has a rapid pace or that is meant to be played with lightening speed, but you have to master the song first. Begin slowly and perfect your execution of the song. Then, you can pick up the pace. If you’re only focusing on the speed you play at it’s easy to get frustrated at your own mistakes. Increase the speed that you learn once you get the hang of it.
